I have avery old compass and it appears that the needle has lost it's ability to point north. Is there a way to re-magnitize the needle?

throw it away and buy a new one

It is possible - to remagnetize your compass needle - but I wouldn't recommend it. For your own safety, and the safety of those with you, I think you should treat yourself to a new compass.
