Even though the news is reporting that radiation levels in the Tokyo water supply are now at safe levels, is there anything people can do to purify water that contains radiation?

Steam distillation will strip safe water from the radiation laden water. The water itself cannot become radioactive, but the impurities in it can hang onto radioactive fallout. Get away from the impurities, and the water is good to go. This steam distillation will also get you some drinkable water from salt water, or water contaminated with heavy metals, like lead.
