Be Smart When You Go Off Road-6

    by

Often times, finding the best hunting spot means getting as far away from the crowds as possible. These days more and more hunters are doing so by hopping in their all-terrain vehicle or four-wheel drive truck (obviously while keeping on legal trails and off fragile habitat). Hunting and off-roading just seem to go hand in had, after all, we all have our favorite hunting vehicles right?

But it never hurts to brush up on safety practices for off-roading before the season starts, and that's where the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association comes in. Sponsored by Arctic Cat, BRP, Polaris and Yamaha, the association is hosting an online course that covers key driving risks, safe riding practices and proper vehicle operation.

    Anti-tax, pro-gun? Then you are a 'terrorist'-1

    by

Don't like being taxed to pay for wasteful government programs? Want to ensure your Second Amendment rights aren't infringed upon? Willing to attend rallies to peacefully and legally demonstrate how important these issues are to you?

Then you -- yes, you! -- just might be a "terrorist."

According to bulletins issued to the Pennsylvania Office of Homeland Security in April and June by the Institute of Terrorism Research and Response, anti-tax and Second Amendment rallies staged in Harrisburg this year warranted "terrorism-alert" warnings.

    Would You Eat This?-13

    by

As an employee for Outdoor Life, I didn't think there would ever come a day when I would be writing about Lady Gaga, but here it is (if you don't know who Lady Gaga is, think Madonna from the 80s plus Brittney Spears after she went crazy).

Last week the singer wore a 50-pound dress made of meat to the the Video Music Awards that was designed by Argentinian fashion designer Franc Fernandez. The dress created a buzz among the media, disgusted some people, made other folks hungry and of course drew plenty of ire from PETA.

Fight Our Wars, But You Can't Own a Handgun-10

    by

The National Rifle Association has filed a lawsuit challenging laws that prohibit 18-20 year olds from legally purchasing a firearm from a federally licensed dealer.

The suit was filed on Sept. 7 in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas in Lubbock against the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms. Some legal pundits say it could eliminate yet another unconstitutional prohibition from federal gun laws.

The plaintiff is James A. DíCruz, 18, of Lubbock, a well-trained, lawful owner of both long guns and handguns, and a decorated competitive Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps marksman. According to the suit, when DíCruz visited Sharp Shooters, Inc., and asked if he was legally able to buy a handgun, he was told he couldn't.

    Bears on a Rampage … In Florida?-7

    by

As black bears continue to expand their range across the country, suburbanites are learning what it's like to live with the mischievous creatures. But the first introductions have not always been pleasant.

This week a family house cat was allegedly killed by a black bear in a suburb south of Orlando, according to local news site clickerlando.com.

"(A bear) killed my cat. My kids found (the cat) while they were playing football in this field. (The cat) was mutilated," Marjie Abed told the site.

Leaky Well is Dead, Obama and Hayward Make Promises-5

    by

Government officials announced on Sunday that B.P.'s Macondo oil well in the Gulf of Mexico is dead and no more oil is leaking into the ocean. The announcement came five months after the well exploded and about 205 million gallons of oil spilled into one of the best fishing regions in the United States.

"Today, we achieved an important milestone in our response to the BP oil spill – the final termination of the damaged well that sat deep under the Gulf of Mexico," President Barack Obama said in a statement over the weekend. "However, while we have seen a diminished need for our massive response that encompassed more than 40,000 people, 7,000 vessels and the coordination of dozens of federal, state and local agencies and other partners, we also remain committed to doing everything possible to make sure the Gulf Coast recovers fully from this disaster."

    Canuck KO’s Bear-8

    by

A lone Canadian logger was assessing timber in British Columbia last week when he suddenly found himself faced by a charging black bear.

Armed with neither pepper spray nor a sidearm, Jesse Mengler had to think fast.  He reached to the ground, grabbed a softball-sized rock and reverted to the skills he once used as a baseball pitcher.

“...He’s ten feet away. I reached back and just threw the rock and struck it right between the eyes,” Mengler later recalled. “It was like I shot it. Knocked it right out!”

Was it a slider or a curve? It doesn’t matter. The bear obviously had its sights set on Jesse.

“It had one intention and that intention was me,” Mengler told CBC News this week.

    Maneater caught in Bahamas-11

    by

I can’t imagine having a fish puke a human body part on me but that’s exactly what happened to Humphrey Simmons this past weekend.  Simmons and some friends were fishing in deep water roughly 38 miles from Nassau when Simmons hooked into the large shark. As Simmons wasn’t targeting sharks and didn’t particularly want to deal with one he asked his friend Stanley Bernard to get the boat’s shotgun. Bernard did and quickly put several rounds into the fish’s head when it surfaced.

The men then tied a rope around the shark’s tail and pulled it to the boat.  Simmons explained, “We were going to cut the hook out of his mouth and let him go when he regurgitated a human foot — intact from the knee down.”

Another Oil Rig Explosion in the Gulf-6

    by

UPDATE: A mile-long sheen is now visible near the site of the oil rig explosion. The sheen is about 100 feet wide, but it is unknown how much oil has been leaked.

The Associated Press reports that another offshore oil platform has exploded in the Gulf of Mexico Thursday. The rig is about 100 miles off the coast of Louisiana and it's west of the Deepwater Horizon site.

Thirteen people were on the rig when it exploded, but no one was killed in the blast. One person was injured, but the extent of the injury is not known.

Officials also do not yet know what caused the explosion or if any oil is is leaking into the Gulf. The platform is located in 340 feet of water and is owned by Mariner Energy of Houston. According to the Department of Homeland Security, the platform was not producing oil and gas at the time of the explosion.

    Drunken Baboons Attack!-19

    by

People in the affluent Cape Town suburb of Constantia, South Africa are being overrun by drunken baboons.

Ok, not all of the baboons are drunk.  But many are.  All of them however, are destructive, frightening and deadly.

At the 325-year-old vineyard Groot Constantia the primates have stripped vines of fruit, entered and raided kitchens and other rooms, and ripped thatch off the roofs. Some have eaten fallen grapes that have fermented in the sun only to pass out. Away from the vineyard, baboons have killed farm and ornamental birds (such as peacock) and pets as large as a Great Dane.
