BACKCOUNTRY GRIZZLY ATTACK
Ron Leming Jr. and his Dad survived a harrowing bowhunt for elk. Instead of a trophy bull, the duo encountered a huge boar grizzly bear.
We went bowhunting for elk outside of Cody and took the horses about 15 miles back in to setup camp. It had been four days and Dad had missed two bulls during the last two days. The plan was to ride about two miles from camp on horseback and then hike in to spot about a quarter-mile further in. When we left camp that morning Dad held out an arrow and said "God, guide my arrow today and let it find its mark." It was a small prayer meant for an elk but little did we know that the arrow would find a very different mark- and more than likely save my life.

I can't believe the couple of peoiple sdaying this is not a big bear. In one aspect it is not huge, BUT it was not long ago that a 200 lbs black bear killed three people at Liard Hot springs, so it does not have to be huge to cause damage and kill you
I agree with turkey777! Good thing it was the bear and not you!!! That must have been really scary! Do you hunt bears? Me and my Dad hunt bears, we missed a good sized black bear last year and that whole time we where looking for it you would hear a snap of a branch and you would freeze... that hair on the back of your neck would stand up and your heart would start to pound and you would raise your rifle just in case. But Dad and I are almost sure tha I missed. But then my confidence was boosted with a blacktail spike that is now mounted in our den! My first deer!!!

a 500 pound bear isn't big enough for you eating on your arm? are you serious? Have you ever been face to face with a 500 pound bear? It's plenty big enough for me! and I am 260#"s!
Good thing it was the bear and not you.
GODS always in control thankful he heard your dads prayer.
Your dads a true hero and you are one of the manliest men ever for being able to fight through that.. 100% All-American Badass
Way to take care of business Dad!
i probably wouldve soiled myself. that would be so terrifying. you did a good job of keeping your composure and fighting it of
Now thats a awsome storie!!! Allways love your parents never know when they might not be there to save you. All three of you are great warriors that crossed paths. Just the way the world turns glad you came out alive and with all your body parts.
It's good you're OK, but running from any bear, even during a charge, is a bad idea. Most bears veer away. Even a can of pepper spray could very well have deterred it--you can fire it from its holster. And I don't mean to be insulting, but it's really not a "huge" bear, although I'm sure it seemed plenty big enough.
im glad that bear is dead man
You can't carry a side-arm bow hunting, in most states. Frankly, he did everything you should do, except play dead. Which in this case may not have worked!
My best advice would be to always carry a .44 Mag. when in bear country. Wow! What a night mare!
Fact is stranger than fiction. Thay's a story made for Hollywood. Old guys rule.
Awesome story.
I cant beleive the dad shot the bear in the neck without hiting the son unbeleivable.
